Half Moon Bay Ocean Course

A Memorable Round at Half Moon Bay Ocean Course: Embracing the Clouds

Playing a round at the Half Moon Bay Ocean Course is an experience that stays with you long after the final putt, and on a cloudy day, it becomes even more atmospheric. With the rolling fog coming off the Pacific and a gentle breeze sweeping across the links-style fairways, it felt as if I was transported to a traditional Scottish course, right here in California.

Designed by Arthur Hills, the Ocean Course boasts panoramic views of the coastline from nearly every hole. On this particular day, the low-hanging clouds added a sense of mystery to each shot, making the undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers all the more challenging. The wind off the Pacific is notorious here, and on a cloudy day, it was no different, forcing careful shot-making at every turn.

One of the standout moments came at the par-3 17th hole, where the Pacific Ocean framed the entire scene. With the wind blowing and the fog rolling in, trusting my swing to aim over the water was no small feat. The view from the tee, however, was nothing short of breathtaking, with the Ritz Carlton in the distance, adding to the drama of the round.

The 18th hole, a 533-yard par-5, was another highlight. The ocean running along the left side created a visually stunning but mentally demanding finish. It’s the kind of hole that makes you appreciate the natural beauty of the course, even if the clouds obscure the distant horizon.

Despite the overcast skies, the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay delivered a truly unforgettable experience. The links-style layout combined with the raw beauty of the coastline makes this a must-play course, regardless of the weather. The mist only enhanced the experience, creating a moody, classic golf setting that was both challenging and mesmerizing.
